In 1997, the population of Luchou exceeded 150,000, and became a city of Taipei County – Luchou City. The prosperity of Luchou made it an important trade partner with Bali and Sanchung area, also, folk religion became more pervasive. Luchou not only has grand religious ritual, the City Government also hosts Guanyin Cultural Festival, which covers wide range of folk religions. Thus, the public has become more aware of the temples and religions.

5. Problems We Had To Overcome:

(1) Teamwork:
Among the problems we faced, the most impressive one is Pei-yu Yu’s decision to drop out from the team. When Pei-yu decided to drop out because he had too much work to do and felt great pressure, we were all upset. This team would have one less person. However, we remembered what our teacher told us, “Things must be carried out from start to finish consistently”, thus, we all made our mind to work harder and make our webpages better. We will endeavor to achieve better results, and do our jobs with utmost efforts. We cannot be beaten by such little thing. The old saying tells, “It’s dogged as does it.” There is nothing in the world we cannot achieve, if we have the determination. Eventually, we completed this project, and everyone felt worthwhile.

(2) Knowledge on the temple:
When we first learned about the temples, we could understand the terms and images. We never saw those before. And we had no clue of what we were looking for when we were searching for information. Thus, the teachers took us to Baohe Temple again, observed the temple, interviewed related people, and took many photos to present the information that we could understand.

6. Our Project Sound Bite:
Although it was hard work, it was worth it. We hope that our efforts could bring out good influences. We believe that with persistence, we could achieve anything.

(3) Project Elements

1. How did your activities and research for this International Schools Cyber Fair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
(1) Community classroom:
One of the reasons we chose Baohe Temple as our topic was to enrich the teaching plan of “community classroom”. We arranged the courses on temple knowledge for third and fourth grade students. And through Baohe Week, the knowledge on Baohe Temple was shared with the whole school, while the third and fourth graders served as guides. The students have learned a lot.
(2) Social studies:
We strengthened the contents of social studies course on traditional architecture, culture, and reflection, so that students could share and grow through this project.
(3) Arts and humanities:
We took the students to explore the beauty of traditional architectures, and presented the observation through notes and paintings, and further used comic dialogue and film clips to demonstrate the performance art in art and humanities course.

3. In what ways did you act as "ambassadors" and spokespersons for your Cyber Fair project both on-line and in person?
(1) Interaction with the community
Staffs of Baohe Temple were really nice, they even gave us 2000~3000 almanacs for prizes. During the tour, they praised the students for being good guides. When we interviewed Mr. Lian-fu Yang, he not only shared with us the future plans for Luchou, but also gave us some new books “The Old Buildings of Luchou”. Teacher Hse-hsian Hong is the person we admire the most, he’s not only enthusiastic and knowledgeable, but also praised us for choosing this topic.
(2) Interaction with teachers and students
During the guided tour we gave, teachers said that we gave a good presentation, and the junior students would greet us now when they see us on campus.

4. What has been the impact of your project on your community?
(1) School life became very busy
Since we joined the Cyberfair, we had to attend meeting or work the tasks in the morning and during lunch break. Some times, the teachers would take us to visit Baohe Temple. We were very busy and tired. We felt like we never had enough time.
(2) Having a lesson outside of classroom
From the project, we learned that temple is not only the center of our religious conviction, but also an art palace. There is so much information left behind by our ancestors. As we entered into the temple, we felt like entering another school.

5. Intellectual property rights:
  Bibliography
The contents of this website are written by the students after reading and analyzing the information collected from the Internet, books, interviewees, and tour guides. The photos and films clips were shot by students. We used some reference books, and list them under references. Most contents on the 36 Generals and Shengjiang Meeting are from “Shengjiang in Luchou”, and we specified that in the webpage.

6. Discoveries, Lessons and Surprises:
(1) The Treasure of Luchou
At the beginning, none of the students knew much about Baohe Temple. After serious study and education, students began to realize that Baohe Temple not only has long history, but also many art pieces by craftsmen to be explored. Others also learned from our project that Luchou itself is a temple that should be treasured.
(2) Things are done by people, without teamwork, nothing can be done
During the research and activity process, we realized the importance of teamwork. When we gave others suggestions, we needed to speak politely, otherwise, no one would listen. Whenever we felt frustrated or were blamed by the teachers, we learned not to be discouraged, but strive to do better. This activity showed us the people connection, and invaluable experiences from teachers and students.
