How did your activities and research for this International Schools CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?

In the project, we integrate language education into nurture of art & humanity and the application of science and technology. We believe that what we reaped from this project can be conducive to our life education. It helps us not only realize the value of our life but also improve our computer skills. We have gathered a lot of information about the “Great Mother” and tried to interpret the profound implication of mother love in the form of drawings. Though the products are far from being sophisticated, the experience with these unfortunate but insurmountable families engraves in our mind the vitality of life.

Meanwhile, through this project, we acquired skills on how to design webpage and roughly process videos. Though we have sacrificed our time for noon snap and holiday, it is worthwhile.

What information tools &technologies did you use to complete your CyberFair project?

Technology

Information tools

Oral Interview

To visit local residents to gather more oral materials

Internet

To search on line for relevant information and talk as many Cyberfriends as possible

DC, DV, image capture card

To photo or record the videos (sounds) of the whole process of interview with or without the participation of interviewers and transfer the films or tapes into VCD or MP3 format

Scanner & printer

To use scanner to process the videos, copy the data information with printer and pass round for study

Telephone & Fax

To contact and communicate interviewees via telephone or fax

USB & CD-RW

To store useful data in the PC without access to internet

Computer software

NAMO, Dreamweaver, PhotoShop, Cuteftp, Office2003

In what ways did you at as “ambassadors” and spokespersons for your Cyberfair project both on-line and in person?

On the day we are to interview, the teacher gathered us and gave us tips and techniques on how to conduct interview at large and communicate our project to the relevant personnel. They were kind. In the interview, we recorded the interviewees’ sounds while putting forward our questions and taking the photos as proof. In the beginning, we had had a fear that the role we played might arouse their antipathy. However, they were so patient with us while answering our questions that we can’t help feeling gratitude to them. We took their words earnestly. Sometimes we presented them with small gifts to show our great gratitude.

The interviewees ranged from teachers, parents, neighbors to staff from different organizations. They also contributed a lot of useful information to the webpage, making it worth reading.

What has been the impact of your project on your community?

(1)

Parents show great concerns on the quality of education service, particularly, teachers’ professional competence and teaching efficiency. Our Cyberfair Project is a good chance for parents to learn about our teachers’ advanced professional training program and its effectiveness on the improvement of teaching plan and strategy. Furthermore, we intend to, via the students of these teachers’, find out what difference has been made on the students’ learning in and out of class after the teacher being trained. Meanwhile, people can learn about interrelations between our teachers’ training and the improvement of teaching quality from our webpage so that people can obtain first-hand information about the interaction of education as well as our school’s growth.

As the data compiled and summarized for the Cyberfair was obtained entirely from interview by teachers and kids in our school. Our “kid correspondents” had to shuttle between cities those days, which make their learning diverse and interesting.

Through this project, we had a wider contact with the people outside school as well as people of different class and from other counties or cities. In addition, other students in our class and their parents who had visited our webpage also came to our computer classroom from time to time to cheer us up.

How have other members of your community assisted and voluntarily participated in your Cyberfair project?

1.Principle De-cheng Huang of Hongyeh Elementary School: giving us utmost support and assistance
2.Hope Agent Development Association: our firm supporter and backup
3.County Councilor, Mr. Rong-hui Lin: He learns a lot of people, which helps save a lot of time.
4.Everyone in Hongyeh Village concerned : Mr. Jhung-yi Chen Lin, Mr. Wen-long Lan, Mr. Jin-yao Hong, Village Head Mr. Chiou-gu Yen, and others who had offered to help us
5.Persian Cat Tutor Club of the National Hualien University of Education: Thank you for being with us all through the project and giving us instructions.

At last, thanks Hope Agent Development Association again for their assistance, with which we could wrap up the project successfully. They have provided us with resources once more and readily offered to help when we encountered difficulties. Jia-ping Li and other nine students in Persian Cat Tutor Club of the National Hualien University of Education have sacrificed almost every weekends during that period of time to tutor us on the project. Many thanks for their support and assistance here.

Intellectual property rights

At the every beginning of the project, teachers had already explained to us what intellectual property rights are and they taught us to respect other’s intellectual property rights. One’s copyright may take forms of written data, computer software, hardware and data on the website. Without author’s permission, one can not copy or pirate them; otherwise, he or she would be punished for stealing other’s labor fruits. So, it was not advised to do this profitless action at expense of other’s interest.

We learned to quote other’s data with the original author’s name and provenance below to let readers know.

Discoveries, lessons and surprises

(1)

The whole process of 2007 Cyberfair was filled new discoveries and surprises, which reaped a lot. Some things we had learnt are:
Discoveries: we did not only experienced great love of mother, but also learned that people with mental and physical handicap need more care and help to live independently, and there was a story of bitterness and struggle behind everyone of them.

Lessons: the old saying goes that many heads are better than one. Since we had a team of seven, it would be handier for us to work. However, if we hadn’t worked as a team to make full use of everybody’s talent and solved dispute with cool heads, we would have been split asunder and could have achieved nowhere. So to speak that the project taught us that union produced greatest strength.

Surprise: Computer could be so much of use!We had ever known that we could play computer game and chat via internet, but we had never thought that computer could play so indispensable a role in the project. It’s really amazing that it could handle everything from static text, animated video to sounds.

(2)

The project was a striking experience to every one of us. We didn’t only learn to use computer to handle data, our ability of data gathering was also greatly enhanced. The interviews, especially that face to face contact with many celebrities, as well as the scene of being interviewed, would be an indelible memory.
