Tribal migration and relocation
In the ancient times Chialaabus tribe lived in the Chiachirutan area with a mountain to the back and Laiyi River in the front, Gaoping Plain to the southwest, it was an ideal place to live. However, as the tribe thrived, it could no longer accommodate the growing population. Legend also has it that the residents were troubled by the Giant Langouste that often invaded the stove so that people could not light the fire for cooking. Therefore, the Archpriest appealed to the Chief Ruvaniau for relocation.
During this movement, the main group moved east to Wuful, that
is the southeast of Laiyi Village; another smaller group moved south where Danlin
Village is now located, they were ancestors of the Danlin Village. This was
Laiyi Village’s the first large scale migration. A small number of tribal people
moved from Chiachirutan to the south to Caro Pon, but this was an open plain
area without any barrier or defense. This was a grave weakness because in the
old time, tribes often attacked each other. So they moved again, this time to
Chala Self (old Danlin) to have commending view from the vantage ground, there
was also a cliff which made it easier to defend. They settled down in this place
until 1953, when they moved to Danlin Village (Chala Self). Chief Ruvaniau led
the main group of the tribe to Wuful; they had to move back to Chialaabus (Old
Village), because the back of Wuful is flatter with no other natural defenses
to protect the residents from attacking. They settled down in Old Village until
1951, when some residents decided to move out to the west and joined residents
from Chala Self (old Danlin) and settled down in Danlin Village. A smaller group
also moved to the west and joined Duaru to form 2 small villages: Yilin Village
(Darnarsiar) and Danlin Village. Another group moved to Gulou Village. The remaining
residents in the Old Village were relocated to where Laiyi Village (Chialaabus)
is today, following government development plans. Today, Paiwan tribe occupies
several villages including Liayi.
