¡@The seventh kind: Local environmental topic

2. "Our local community " Comments:
Hualian County, called ' after mountain ', possess pretty mountains and rivers. Chihkeshan is located in Yuli Township, Hualian County. And its administrative division belongs to Guanyin of Yuli Township. Because of its inconvenient traffic, it has been the traditional agricultural production area contacted with the external world very few all the time for a long time. In early periods, Chihkeshan did not mean regularly which one. In the period of being occupied by Japan, Japanese cut down plenty of Chihke tree; and therefore it gained the name.

The photo offered by: Teacher Shui-huo Zhan
In recent years, the improper development of the mountain forest in Taiwan ¡§The nightmare of soil stone flow¡¨ promotes our government to prepare for regaining the state-run forest land, cutting down Jin-Zhen, planting generally native species of trees. As to Chihkeshan, so severe a test is approaching step by step. Is it the vanishing of the industry? Or, is it the arrival of the new opportunity? How to achieve the new vitality of Chihkeshan again?

3. The case study plans outline:

Chihkeshan, one of the three major Jin-Zhen producing regions of Taiwan, lies in the town in Yuli Township Hualian County. The elevation height of Chihkeshan is about 800-1200 meters. It belongs to the ground of forest class of the forest affair office. The early residents came from the disaster of Meishan. Because it was difficult to make a living by afforesting, peasants changed one after another to plant the high industrial crops ¡V Jin-Zhen.
From 2000, the government in Hualian County coached Chihkeshan to move towards recreation agriculture to develop tourism. However, because peasants failed to reach the agreement of afforesting, the lease was stopped many years ago. And the final goal of government in Hualian County is to build another place in Hualian of different scenic spot which combine ecology, industry and culture. Besides, it inspired the ability of residents to rely on their own efforts and the development that continued forever.

4. Our internet network environment:

There is a computer classroom in our school, where 41 PCs are in all. With the server and administrative part, the whole school nearly has more than 50 PCs that form one regional network. Through the not synchronous transmitting of Chinese telecommunications and the ADSL special line linked with the network center of Hualian County, we can connect with the academic network of Taiwan. Besides, the printer is hung in the network directly; any computer in the classroom can all connect and print out.
On ordinary days, the computer classroom is opened for classmates¡¦ using in extracurricular time. The transmission of ADSL special line is very fast. But after leaving school and going home, we can only dial to surf the Net to interflow E-mail, discuss and upload the reports. The transfer rate is much slower.

5. The difficult problem which we overcame:

(1)Collecting materials:
Because the sightseeing of Jin-Zhen, Chihkeshan began to famous in recent years, and someone took notice of the local topic gradually.
However, the extant materials were quite limited, we invited by telephone, visit locals, the grand old men, graduate students and relevant units. Besides, we inquired and collected such resources as characters, photos by surf the net.
(2)Personnel combine:
Members <including teachers> of us came from different grades, classes. Because of the trend of diversification study, not only the school activities come one by one, but also our original accomplishments, school study can't stop for our participating in the cyberfair. Therefore, we went out to interview partly by using Wednesday when we leaved school, or even by using our weekends or holidays. And, we continued fighting with the reports after school study or homework writing. We held our time tightly to do the most efficient communication, constantly adjust research contents and webpage structure.
(3)Humane care:
Because of the land-usage problem of Chihkeshan, peasants on the mountain are communicating to coordinate with the government. Hence, they all expect our visit. One reason is that they hope we can reach the result propagated; the other one is to arouse masses' concern about Chihkeshan topic. Being simple, pure and honest, they always have their heart filled for our arrival with smile. They did not care for our bothering. And they talked to us without reserving just like talking to their old friends. Their attitude made us more responsible for caring about residents on Chihkeshan. And we should make all-out efforts even more too.

6. The admonition of gains:

The only way to solve problem is that everybody struggles hard for their own home and advance towards the same goal together. The land is the place where pregnant with everything.
We can grow interdependently with the land by the only way that we love it and treasure it.
The best one visiting resources, is the most natural, primitive kinds of looks and feeling.

1. As to the Cyberfair this time, the following explains how the case study plan combined together with the Grade 1-9 Curriculum.

(1)Teacher's specialty
Participating in this project impelled teachers to form a studying organization. Through the constant discussion and communicating, teachers can contribute their specialty in the activity, be familiar with the progresses and skills of case study which established the specialty when engage in action research in the future. At the same time, in the period of devotion without being regretful, teachers¡¦ personal professional image and professional dedication are promoting

(2)Students study
The Grade 1-9 Curriculum emphasizes the subject integration and the actual application of discipline ability. Under teacher's appropriate planning, students experience the combination and application of subject ability in the process of real research and get the great fulfillment after finishing the webpage. We believe such successful study experience will contribute to their independent study in the future and promote the study interest.

The concrete effects of study are as follows:
1. Social Studying Area By means of the case study, students have known the elders¡¦ life style in the past and nurtured their attitude of caring others. At the same time, they extend their study by linking up with knowledge in the textbook.
2. Science and Technology The achievement of the case study exactly contributed to summing up, studying and promoting the judge ability. Noting down the interview and making the webpage actually reach the application of information and technology.
3. Mandarin Studying Area Interviewing, discussing through the net, writing the progress reports and fleshing the webpage content out combined with listening, speaking, reading and writing ability in an all-round way.
4. Ten core competence Teachers regularly worried about that how to integrate the ten core competence into teaching when doing the course project in the past. Such study activity offers a chance for us to prove. In the process of the whole research and webpage making, students use their every ability in it naturally and virtually.

3. How to play the role of "ambassador" or spokesman in the cyberfair case study through on-line or individual contact.

(1)Visit

By use of the chance of interview, we state the theme and content of our study to the person visited.

(2)Parents participation

We encourage parents to register as a member of school-net in Taiwan to participate in interviewing the research activities together.

(3)The expert consults

We get in touch with and visit the experts, scholars and relevant units in person according to the theme of studying.

(4)Participate in the community:

We visit residents in the area one by one, introduce our research theme and content, and establish good communication relationship.

4. What kind of influence and impact does your case study plan caused to you?

To a lot of sight-seeing resorts, we often thought it should be that the locality should put oneself in order. All regard visitor as the orientation. But when reaching Chihkeshan, we just realized in surprise that it actually should not be like this. People are all wrong. Everybody was used to letting the land adapt to us in the past. In fact, the real method should be that we should adapt to and experience the land. Such understanding will just be deep and touched. Therefore, each time when seeing the purely frank and nature of residents on Chihkeshan, we always have a lot of happiness with happy and admire in the heart. We hope the pure fairyland can meet us with its most primitive kinds of looks forever.

5. How do your locals offered assistance or participated in your case study plan in free?

(1)Parents

In the course of whole research, parents' support is our greatest motive power.? Everybody paid the bill, exerted oneself, accompanied the child to go up the mountain and interview, and wrote with the report together. Beside, they help to collect such materials as the relevant newspapers, news reports, and so on.

?(2)Community personage

Mr. Ming-han Huang, Miss Su-yan Pan and a lot of locals offered us quite a lot of oral account materials and shared us with experiences.

?(3)The experts and scholars

Miss Xiu-qing Chen and Mr. Shi-xiong Yan are quite familiar with the research of Chihkeshan.? They offered us a lot of inspiration, suggestion and very abundant materials.

(4)Public affair organization

Aunties and uncles of the Peasant Association of Yuxi in Hualian County told us kindly the plans and position of the government unit and offered a lot of relevant materials too.

?(5)Local media

Offer us the relevant research reports and propaganda.

(6)Company's unit

Express gratitude to FengChao Phonograph Disk offering us the background music.

(7)School group

Principal Ci-lin Lin, director Zhi-feng Qiu, teacher Jia-rong You, teacher Yu-zhen Guan and teacher Wei-yao Hong not only cared about our research process, provided us brilliant ideas and opinions, but also provided us assistance of human resources.

6. Explain the works intelligence proprietary of the thematic webpage.

Our webpage materials mostly came from gathering together the content of specially interviewing. We have already obtained interviewees' consent while visiting. We obtained the author's consent right to use all those website's materials by the way of e-mail. And we gained the consent right to use those documents and materials from those executives by the way of telephone. We dealt with those periodicals and theses by indicating their sources. As to those photos, except shooting by us, the others were all offered voluntarily by the photographers who agree us to use them in our webpage. The sources were indicated clearly in the article paragraphs of the webpage.

Do you remember?
Do you remember us? We met accidentally once at the Jia-Mi Garden on Chihkeshan. We heard from Auntie Xiao-yan that you are now studying the impact of Jin-Zhen on Chihkeshan environment. So we would like to ask you some questions.
First of all, I would like to introduce myself, I am a student of RuiSuei Elementary School of RuiSuei Township, Hualian County. We participated in the Taiwan School Cyberfair of 2004, and the classification that we participate in is ¡§Local environmental topic¡¨ What we are going to probe into is ¡§The environmental topic on Chihkeshan¡¨.
Could you tell me whether Jin-Zhen on Chihkeshan at present will cause the problem of water and soil conservation? Could you please offer us some suggestions and research theses? We believed that it will have very great help to our research this time, thank you!

Vice captain Ji Li, and all the group members of The Good Day of Day Lily of RuiSuei Elementary School sincerely yours

Theme: Re: Dear Brother Da-xiong, I am a student of the RuiSuei primary school, please help ...

Welcome everybody having the heart to probing into the environmental question of our hometown. I touched to the environmental question on Chiheshan very accidentally. To your questions, I simply reply with the materials that I collected.
Will the Jin-Zhen cause the water and soil conservation problem? In my opinion and what the peasants on Chihkeshan stated, the root of Jin-Zhen can prolong to the ground bottom nearly 2 meters deeply that it is good at grabbing the land. And the Jin-Zhen is the perennial. Some Jin-Zhen has already been planted for nearly 40 years on the mountain at present and has never turned over the soil. It is very obvious that the ridge between fields nearby the place planting Jin-Zhen has all changed into the ditch. The water and soil conservation of the places planting Jin-Zhen is better than the ridge between fields without being covered by any other plants.
Besides, there is a piece of Jin-Zhen water and soil conservation demonstration area in Taimali of Taitung County. Also, a geologist, professor Shi-jiao Zhang, has the idea that the Jin-Zhen on Chihkeshan is unlikely to destroy water and soil conservation.
(see http://archive.udn.com/2003/10/24/NEWS/DOMESTIC/DOM7/1636025.shtml)
But I do not bet the water and soil conservation of the Jin-Zhen is better than that of the forest because I have not found the comparison of water and soil conservation ability between Jin-Zhen and forest. At the same time while developing the industry of Jin-Zhen, those roads and worker¡¦s small houses built up for planting Jin-Zhen may possibly destroy the water and soil conservation instead of Jin-Zhen garden. So, planting Jin-Zhen does not necessarily destroy the water and soil conservation; however, those essential facilities while planting Jin-Zhen may influence the water and soil conservation. Fortunately, Chih-ke area has not occurred any geological calamity caused by planting Jin-Zhen yet so far, for instance the slipping stratum or the soil and stone flow.
In addition, there is more detailed explanation for the analysis of source and solution to the land utilization dispute problem on Chihkeshan in the project report that I participated in. The report is now in course of printing. Please offer your address to me. After printing and finishing, I will send one for your reference. In addition, if you collect any materials that have places where we can consult in, please offer to me. You exert yourselves to interview and collect materials so that there must be things that I did not notice. I¡¦m very glad that you will continue exchanging opinions with me in the future. Thank you to care about the hometown land again. I am very joyful that as young as you have the enthusiasm for researching. Wish your websites to succeed and bless your smooth-going in the study road, too. Finally, thanks to the group which is led by Mr. Zhan provides the best guidance for our small masters.
Graduate student of Graduate Institute of Environmental Policy in National Dong Hwa University Shi-xiong Yan

7. Finding, lessons, and surprised

The earth is our mother. She offers the resources of daily living needs to us. If this land of our excessive use, she will be angry and punishing us. What we should do is treat her well, love dearly and have pity for her. In this way, we can just nestle in her chest happily.
Jin-Zhen is the perennial herb. Peasants picked only the flower part as the harvests every year. Therefore, the root of Jin-Zhen will deepen in the soil more and more and grow denser and denser too. So Jin-Zhen couldn¡¦t be defeated by the big tree about the strength of water and soil conservation!
On Chihkeshan, we saw a lot of life styles that has never been seen. Because the residents on the mountain, quite a lot were what has been had no money came to Chihkeshan. In order to live in a most economic way, residents thought a lot of methods. As if there is one kind ¡§cow dung Cuo¡¨ on the mountain, residents are afraid of the cold wind irritated into in the house. They put up with the wood, fill in the gaps of the room with the cow dung and loess. It made people with deep impression.
