Question 50:The furthest offshore lighthouse in the world
A:
Oryuk Islets is t he symbol of Busan Port , with many scenic spots. Visitors can enjoy those views through a cruise.
Oryuk Islets are located on the east of Busan Port, and consists of a chain of six islands including Bangpaesom (also called Shield Island), Solsom (also called Pine Island), Surisom, Songossom (also called Awl Island), Goolsom (also called Cave Island) and Deungdaesom (also called Light House Island), listed in the order of nearest to furthest from shore. The name of Oryuk Islets originates from the movement of tides. Five islands are visible at low tide, but at high tide six are visible. At low tide, the causeway connecting Bangpaesom (Shield Island) and Solsom (Pine Island) is exposed, and visitors may consider those two islands to be one . When the tide rises, the sea water covers the causeway, so visitors may see six islands on the sea. Therefore, locals name the islands Oryukdo Islands, meaning Five or Six Islands in Korean.
Visitors can view Oryuk Islets clearly around the zone authority office of Yeongdo-gu. Those six islands are marked as of Local Cultural Asset No. 22 from the municipal designation . Bangpaesom , the nearest one to the shoreline among the six, resembles a shield, which can block storms like a shield. So Bangpaesom is also called Shield Island. Solsom is called Pine Island because there are lush green pines there. Songossom is called Awl Island because its shape looks like an awl. Surisom was called Eagle Island because crowds of eagles used to gather there to catch sea gulls . At that time, there stands one memorial monument, so the island is also called Monument Island.
Goolsom, the largest island among those six, has a large cave and water drops from the ceiling of the cave for people to drink. So people call it Cave Island because of the natural phenomena. The farthest island offshore is Deungdaesom, which is also called Light House Island after the establishment of the lighthouse.
