Question 10 :Which department supervises lighthouses?

A:
The Taiwan Customs Offices govern a total of 34 lighthouses, 41 light beacons, 6 radio beacons and 9 radar beacons in Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu.

Recently, the Central Government has actively implements flattening organizations internally. To conform to this instruction, the Directorate General of Customs (DGOC) held the first national lighthouse conference within the last more than ten years at the customs administration building on December 14, 2004. The goals of this meeting was to work out strategies and polici es to enable customs authorities to have simplified internal organization that work better and cost less as well as to cope with reducing numbers of lighthouse workers.

As we know, the lighthouse workers led dull and poor lives. All they need for work, facilities and living necessities were mostly supplied by supply vessels of the Customs Offices regularly before. At present, some working environments of lighthouses are still under bad conditions. In some places, especially in offshore islands, workers need to rely on rainwater as their drinking water, and there are no sufficient medical facilities. Mr. Shaw-Wu Yu, Director General of DGOC promised to enhance working environment of lighthouses, and praised hardworking of those offshore lighthouse staff who had dedicated to their work for a long time.
