Question 44:The lighthouse has moved and rebuilt most frequently ?
A:Waisanding Isle Lighthouse
The lighthouse is located in the shallow sand bar of the external sea in Kouhu Township. There are numerous sandbars facing Penghu archipelago. It is dangerous to sail on the fairways in Penghu, and easy for vessels to ground. Therefore, the government set up a lighthouse at Waisanding Sand Bar to secure and guide vessels. |
The lighthouse was built in 1914 and made of iron frames. This iron-framed structure was measured 15 meters high, and equipped with the fifth-class acetylene flashing lamp, which flashed once every two seconds with 800 candlepower of light. The building was struck and fallen down by strong splashing waves in 1920, and thus was rebuilt in 1921. However, the reconstruction was destroyed again by sea waves that led to movement and disappearance of sandbars. |
In 1957, the government rebuilt one tetragonal iron-framed lighthouse, which was measured 20.7 meters high and equipped with the fifth-class acetylene lamp, shining 400 candlepower light. In 1965, the lighthouse was re-equipped with the direct current (DC) electric lamp, which generated 2,600 candlepower light and flashed once every three seconds. |
In 1974, due to movement of sandbars again, the government rebuilt a distinctive pyramid (square cone) shaped lighthouse, which was made of iron-framed. The construction site was moved to the current spot. The lighthouse was re-equipped with the fourth-class direct current (DC) electric lamp, which generated 3,500 candlepower light. |
The lighting equipment was improved that it can shine 10,000 candlepower light in 1977. |
The lighthouse is equipped with multidirectional metal radar reflectors. |
Height of Lighthouse: 32.4 meters |
Height of Light (above H.W.): 35.5 meters |
Nominal range: 14.3 nautical miles |
