Question 37:The last lighthouse that used the kerosene lamp to shine?

A:The Lighthouse of Pengjia Islet (the lighthouse is also re-equipped with the electric lamp now)

The Lighthouse of Pengjia Islet is located in Pengjia Yu (Pengjia Isle) on the northern sea area of Taiwan. There were four possible sites to choose in building the Lighthouse of Pengjia Islet. 1. the area at a altitude of 468 feet on the east 2. the area at a altitude of 426 feet on the central-east 3. the area at a altitude of 387 feet on the central-northeast 4. the flat area at a altitude of 200 feet that is the foot of a 387-feet-tall hill The second site was considered the most suitable location for the lighthouse after the official consultative conference

The construction was divided into three periods. Beginning from 1906, the construction was set to end in 1908. During the first period, one temporary 10-feet lighted beacon of red fixed light was installed to facilitate the transportation of building materials. At the end of 1908, most construction was finished except the main lantern and lighting facilities because of delayed delivery of those materials. Besides, the monsoon blew hard and cause huge waves to make it difficult to carry building materials. Therefore, the construction once stopped for a while and couldn’t be finished according to the schedule. In early May 1909, the lanterns and facilities were delivered and installed. The installation was completed at the end of July. The lighthouse was designed with brick and tubular structure, and equipped with the incandescent oil lamp with the first-class rotary lens and 864,000 candlepower light. The lighthouse shone white light once every fifteen seconds. Its beams is visible in all directions except for 2 nautical miles from 264 to 316 degrees because of the higher plateaus of the islet. The lighthouse was installed with fog guns. The lighthouse started service in September 20, 1909, and the temporary lighted beacon was removed on the same date. The lighthouse is located at the highest altitude in Taiwan.

In 1914, the lighthouse was equipped with wireless phones to communicate with Keelung Lighthouse directly. In 1918, the communication system was broken because the antennal pole was damaged by typhoon. At present, the lighthouse communicates with Keelung Lighthouse through two-way radio communications devices.

On January 9, 1945, the lighthouse stopped lighting soon after it was attacked by bombs for the first time. Later on January 11, May 15 and May 16, the lighthouse was attacked again continuously. After the Recovery of Taiwan, the Taiwan Customs renovated the lighthouse and finished the reconstruction on June 19, 1946.

From September 1948 to June 1949, nearby broken wooden-roofed houses was rebuilt into brick-wall and concrete flat-roofed houses as administration offices and dorms for lighthouse keepers.

The wharf of Pengjia Yu was damaged during the blasting operation of hidden reefs among channels. The renovation of wharf was completed in July 1974.

  Height of Lighthouse: 26.2 meters

Height of Light (above H.W.): 145.4 meters
