Keelung Lighthouse is located at Wanrendueibi, a cape protruding to the sea near the Keelung Harbor. Starting from 1899, the construction of the lighthouse was completed in 1900. This brick and tubular building was installed with the kerosene lamp shining white and red fixed light. The lighthouse was refitted with the acetylene lamp in 1913, then re-equipped with the alternating current (AC) lamp that shone red and white occulting lights every six seconds in 1932. Later on, the lighthouse was re-equipped with electric flash lamp that flashed red and white beams of 7,500 candlepower twice consecutively every seven seconds in 1956. In 1969, the lighthouse was refitted with the fourth-class electric lamp that generated higher power of 21,000-candlepower white light and 3,600-candlepower red light. Since May 16, 1989, the red beam was replaced by the white beam with the same lighting candlepower. |
