The land of Taipei 101 is
owned by the City Government. It was built with BOT scheme. Build, Operate and
Transfer, i.e., it was invested and built by private sector and after operating
for 70 years, it will be transferred to the Taipei City Government. In other
words, Taipei 101 was built in 1997, after operating for 70 years, it will be
transferred to the Taipei City Government in 2067.
During 7-year’s construction, 5 workers died
due to the earthquake occurred on March 31, 2002 so
that its construction was suspended for some time. Later, another electrician
died because of an electric shock. In future, Taipei 101 will
build a memorial wall for remembering these partners who had dedicated and sacrificed
for the construction of Taipei 101.
Taipei basin was a
lake in the past. The earth under ground level is mostly muddy clay. The
difficulty of building a megastructure on such unstable foundation base is very
high. Therefore, the underpinning of Taipei 101 was very
deep. It was placed 80 m below the laccolith so that it is very stable.
Taipei 101 is a
landmark building. As it is high so it is very windy up there. Whenever a
typhoon comes, journalists prefer to report the typhoon striking condition
while holding a tree under the tower for obtaining an exaggerative effect.
This year’s Double-tenth National Day, the scenic spots originally
arranged for the home-coming Oversea Chinese such as Lungshan Temple etc were
later changed to Taipei 101. They were very happy for having the opportunity to see Taiwan’s
prosperity and progress.
Since last year, New Year welcoming party has been jointly presided
by Taipei City Government and Taipei 101 with the final countdown and fireworks. When magnificent
fireworks are shot from Taipei 101 in outburst, the whole world is watching. This is a pride of
all of us!
