The
Birth of Taipei
101
|
- In
1990, Shinyi Area of Taipei was designated as Taipei Financial Center. Therefore, Taipei 101 was developed and built as BOT by the
group participated by several bankers, insurance companies and construction firms
etc. It was formerly named as “Taipei Financial Building” with 88 floors, but she was increased to
a total of 101 floors.
- Taipei 101 was
originally proposed to be named as “Great Ambition” for the meaning of aiming
at the sky, i.e., the building is to be born by the integration of many
people’s profound commitments against their great ambition. Because of the
great ambition of these people, the sky-scraper higher than the cloud is to be
created.I

Aviation
Height Restriction
|
The construction implementation of Taipei 101 was not that successful. One month after
its commencement, the impact of aviation height restriction from Sunshan Airport exposed. Therefore, Civil Aeronautic
Administration Ministry urged them to reduce its height. Later, after
airplane’s aviation courses were amended and aviation control reinforced, 101
floors maintained with a height of 508 meter.
Taipei 101 is located in Taipei basin; there are not only frequent typhoons but also
earthquakes within the region. To crown it all, Taipei was originally a lake with earth of soft geological nature.
Therefore, how to fix Taipei 101 in firmly standing up is actually testing Taiwan’s construction standard. In order to fulfill 2 kinds
of demand - its main structure to be strong and firm enough to resist strong
wind; when there happens to be an earthquake, it also has to be flexible, the
engineers have designed a building of firm and flexible structure.
The main frame
structure of 101 building applied the most advanced architectural technology -
“Tenacity 3-dimentional steel cable system”. A number of 30 columns are
installed as its vertical support where 8 of them with mega steel columns
poured with 10,000 psi concrete. Moreover, there are 3 to 4 meter thick
concrete underneath the ground level. There are 380 nos. of reinforcing bar
driven down onto laccolith 80 meter below ground level for fulfilling required
strength and tenacity in order to enable the building firm as mountain when
encountering strong wind.

331 Earthquake
|
On March
31, 2002, the big 331 earthquake
occurred. It was within the very site where Taipei 101 was constructed. At that time, the steel
structure of the building had been built up to about the height of 56th
floor. Two of the 4 sets of tower crane fixed on the building were shaken down
to the ground killing 5 workers and 16 victims of minor or serious injuries. One
of the two tower cranes had pounded onto Sun-Chi Road that smashed many cars
and injured passer-by. The other set had smashed the roof of the podium area (bright
cover). This accident forced the City Government to partially suspend the work
of the pylon portion with written order. The work restored on 4th of
July, that had lengthened her completion schedule.

Grand Opening
of Taipei 101
|
The grand opening
ceremony of Taipei 101 was held on December 31, 2004. In addition to declaration of Taipei 101’s entry to
the brand new operation stage, the lighting of the new year crossing matched
with superb eye-catching 30 sec firework, which rather has successfully declared
to the people around the globe that Taipei 101 era is here.

World Sky-scraper; it has won the world’s No. 1 for 3 items respectively as
follows: The world’s tallest building, the world’s highest utilization floor
and the world’s tallest roof. It is unlikely to be surpassed by any other tall
building within 5 years. |
|
The
world’s fastest elevator: Only 37 sec is required for climbing from 5th Floor directly
up to the indoor Viewpoint Stage at 89th Floor. The climbing speed is
1010 meter per minute. It is the world’s fastest elevator and its length is
also the world’s No.1. |
|
The
world’s first set of damper exposed to the building of overall design. Its weight reaches 660 ton. While dining at the
85th, 86th and 88th Floor, the damper

The
Tallest Buildings in the World
|
In primitive age, buildings were mostly
bungalows where they were single-storey to a maximum of two floors. Therefore,
in 1885, when the world’s first high-rise building – Home Insurance Building
appeared in Chicago, USA, the competition of constructing taller high-rise
buildings began since then.
The
first building that had got the breakthrough of 100 meter restriction was - the
World Building built in New York, USA. It had a total of 20 floors.
After the 20th Century, a
gigantic whirlpool of high-rise buildings became a phenomenon. One high-rise
building after another was constantly built. They had over and over again overcome
dangers, obstacles and the restriction of heights, from formerly 100 meter high
up to 200 meter …300 meter. Then in 1972, America’s World Trade Building had surpassed the restriction of 400 meter.
Furthermore, on October 9, 2003, Taipei 101’s steeple was lifted to her top floor by using
hydraulic equipment. So the moment she had got the breakthrough of 500 meter,
she has become the world’s tallest building.
She has surpassed the height of Petronas
Twin Tower of Koala Lumpur in Malaysia,
Shell Building of Chicago, the well known World Trade Building and
Empire State Building of USA, in making Taiwan
visible to the entire world. The top list of the world’s tallest buildings is
