Introduction─ KMRT

        Traffic jam and air pollutions are commonly seen on the street of big cities. As for Kaohsiung City traffic, we see car moving very slowly on main streets during the peak hours. To reduce the number of cars, the people are encouraged to take the public transportation. However, the public transportations can not satisfy the needs of the people commuting from their offices to their home. People feel unhappy about public transportation being delayed, or too expensive. Rapid Transit helps solve their problems.

     History─ Birth of KMRT

        The construction plan started on April 12, 1990 when the Preparation Office of the Bureau was established. Committee of Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit was established on 14 April 1990 .  Mass Rapid Transit Bereau, Kaohsiung City took its present form on 9 May 1994 . The construction started in October, 2001.

    Lines of KMRT─ Red Line

        There are two lines of KMRT, the Red Line and Orange Line.
Red Line
Running south to north, the Red Line will start at the intersection of Yanhai and Hanmin Roads in Hsiaokang District, and follow Jungshan and Boai Roads through Kaohsiung City before ending in Chiaotou, Kaohsiung County, with the total length of 28.3 kilometers. The Red Line comes with 24 stations, of which 15 will be underground, 8 elevated, and one at ground level. The Line goes through commercial center, railway station, Central Park and Sando Commerce Circle . The Formosa Station has been planned to be one of the large stations. The end of the Line will come to Kaohsiung International Airport and ends at the intersection of Yanghai Road and Hanming Raod.

     Lines of KMRT─ Orange Line

Orange Line
      Running west to east, the Orange Line will start at Hsitzuwan and then follow Jungjeng Road out to Fengshan City and on to Taliao, Kaohsiung County. The total length of this line is about 14.4 kilometers with 14 stations. All the stations will be underground except for the ground level Taliao Station. A single depot will be built to serve the line. It passes the earliest developed Yanchangpu, City Council and intersects with the Red Line and goes east to Datung Department Stores and military camp in Kaohsiung County . It goes through the most prosperous area and ends at Daliao.

    Funding for KMRT

       The total cost of the construction will be NT$181,370 billion. The construction applies BOT model. The funding will be not made only by the government. The company will support the construction, which may be detailed in “BOT” model.

    Concept of KMRT

   KMRT construction will be completed at the end of next year. It will start operating then. For Kaohsiung City , it means a milestone. There are four main goals of KMRT. KMRT will be “safe,” ”innovative,” “comfortable,” and “convenient.”

I. Night time women waiting zone:
To provide a safe space for women passengers waiting for the trains.
II. Set up surveillance facilities:
There surveillance facilities set up in most of the public area. The monitoring devices in KMRT are installed by consulting Taipei MRT.
III. Securities, staff:
The company arranges the securities patrolling the station. Station staff and guards will join the tasks if necessary.
IV. Preventing falling:
Warning signs and strips warn the passengers to keep a distance with the rail, should there be a person or belonging falling onto the tracks, staff will provide assistance.

Fire extinguishers and hydrants are located on all platforms.

I. Disability-free space

For the safety of disabled, elderly or temporarily encumbered, elevators, pathway for wheelchairs can be found in the station. Spaces for wheelchairs are located at both ends of train behind the driver’s compartment.

II. Transfer services:
Since KMRT may not take the passengers to their destination, the company plans many transfer buses, community buses to take the passengers to industrial park and large communities. Staff in KMRT stations would help the passengers call a taxi at night.
III. Value-adding cards:
In the future, the people can use the value adding card issued by KMRT to take the buses, ferry, or even use the pay phone or shop in a convenient store.

KMRT stations provide variety services. It is to provide every passenger feel at home and have a pleasant trip.

      Expectation of KMRT

         According to the plan, the south end, Siaogang Station, of Red Line to Sanduo Shopping District Station will be opened at the end of 2006. The Red and Orange Line will start operating at the end of 2007.  Recent reports of accidents occurred in KMRT construction sites and some even damaged houses of citizens. Some of the Kaohsiung citizens have doubts in the construction. But I still believe that all of the Kaohsiung would like to have a safe, comfortable and convenient public transportation!
