Sweet potato was an important agricultural crops in earlier days of Taiwan. It not only was the major food of the poor, but also was the important feedstuff for pigs. It was planted without attentive care, and its price was cheap. Hence, it became a treasure during the turbulent and harsh times. |

Although, after 1968, the planted area of sweet potato had decreased, it was again increased while the population was increasing sharply after World War II. People reduced eating sweet potato while rice production was increasing and rice becomes major food. Sweet potato, however, was still there, awaiting an opportunity of being repositioned. |

Previously it was no comparison with rice; however, nowadays it is a luxury equal to rice. These changes represent the different cultures of sweet potato in different time period. |
