CyberFair Has Started!

Content:

Look here children from LangdaoElementary School!
The annual project we are entering ¡V CyberFair has started. Although last year we did not receive an award but the teacher believes that as long as we can keep to our goal then during the process we will also be richly rewarded.

Today we must start to prepare for the CyberFair by allocating the duties. We have allocated the following groups:
Video-Capturing Group: Lu-yi, Cao-fa
Paperwork Group: Shao-eng, Chiong-hui, Min-hua, Shao-an
Interview Group: Geng-yu, Su-yueh, Min-cheng, Tze-huang

The First Practical Session

Content:

Since new members had joined the group, thus we needed to re-confirm the assignments and goals.

Today Shao-eng needed to take care of a younger brother and could not come to school.Perhaps in future we should communicate with the students¡¦ parents to see whether during this period the students may be allowed to concentrate only on learning.

The focus today was on teaching the students how to use MSN, since in future during interviews there will be plenty opportunities to use MSN, thus it¡¦s a requirement.

Discussion on Project Topic

Content:

We used the afternoon time to first discuss all the possible areas covered by this topic, and although it felt like we did not cover as much as expected, at least the students could grasp some important parts, especially when we discussed the elderly people, where the students could quickly understand the basics and thus it will be easier for them to become familiarized when they start their assignments.

The students will need more practice with the digital camera, especially with focusing where they did not seem to be comfortable.

Let¡¦s first take a student¡¦s group photo ¡V as a symbol for the start of the event!

Re-confirming the Outlines

Content:

The students could not clearly grasp the concepts in the outline!Perhaps we¡¦ll have to spend more time on this part and concentrate especially on teaching the students to clearly understand Lanyu Homecare Association¡¦s work and goals and established objectives!

Since during this time the students were preparing for the tests and webpage drawing competition, so they were very busy, but we must to collect all the content for the webpage outline and parts before December, so that we may utilize December and the winter break for compilation of data.

Preparation before Visits and Interviews

Content:

Soon I hope to take the students to the Lanyu Homecare Association for a tour, but we had to first do some preparations beforehand!

Firstly ¡V We must understand the nature of content of their work.

Secondly ¡V Who are the Association¡¦s members?

Thirdly ¡V What are the Associations¡¦ prospects and current difficulties?

Fourthly ¡V What some of the Association¡¦s important duties at present?

Before we departed we needed to let the students understand the key issues of this visit, so that we may obtain the required answers within the estimated time!

The students were unfamiliar with this type of preparative work and during the first online discussion everyone spoke incoherently, so possibly one of more discussions will be required to clear up the concepts.

Additional Reading ¡V The Devil and the Farmer

Content:

Today we used our afternoon time to let the students read a story that was altered from a Russian fable which coincidently was correlated with our topic!

Greed always drives a person making us desire a better life while neglecting the other¡¦s presence.Think whether there is someone like that around you, or perhaps you are one as well!

By letting the students read this story they could easily realize that being content with one¡¦s self will bring happiness, and if we use this to help people, then we can build a perfect world!

Making Invitation Cards for the Elderly People in the Village

Content:

We used the afternoon to make the invitations, for the Ginger-bread House contest next Friday, and it correlated with our webpage topic, as we wanted to make the webpage to not only show the functions of Lanyu Homecare Association, but more importantly was so that the students could learn that what we could provide for the elderly people, was not only clothing or food but even more important were our concerns.

With the hope that it would bring them some warmth and caring, we made cards to invite the elderly people in the village to share the Ginger-bread houses we made,.

Only 3 teachers in the whole school

Impossible right?

Well due to yesterday¡¦s bad weather the teachers did not come in.

Teacher Chiou remained in school but he had to stand-in for so many classes. He looks very tired! So I think today we¡¦ll let him rest and let us rather practice MSN!

Learning how to use Skype

Content:

¡@¡@ Due to the major informant being at the National Dong Hwa University undergoing postgraduate studies and the fact that MSN has poor audio quality and voices were unclear, thus a few afternoons were used for the students to learn skype, and we will use this method to interview the major informant, however the students were still not familiar with using skype, so I wonder whether the first meeting tomorrow at 9am will go smoothly. But the students all looked very excited!

Using skype to Interview Aunt Shu-lan

Content:

Previously the students had started to learn how to use skype, and they were fascinated at this tool.I also began to think whether we could integrate some of the tools used during prior research activities! The school teacher was eager and told me that skype has many plug-in programs and that perhaps one can be used for recording conversations, so I went searching on toget and really found such a program. After two days of testing it I discovered that it functioned well, and will be a great help to students that were slow in writing, which made their data compilations difficult!

For the first interview that started at 9am, the students had already prepared 10 questions. The students had performed very well, and though it was their first time interviewing someone with this method they had used proper procedures and etiquette.I believe that in future interviews the students may improve even more.

Compiling Interview Data

Content:

The focus of this week was to compile our interview data on to paper for presentation on the webpage.

Since the students typed slower so I typed today¡¦s progress report for them.

The students listened to Aunt Shu-lan¡¦s interview and wrote down the key-points with pencil and then into text data.Though during this process the students could obtain accurate answers, it was slow and required more time from the students, yet it was a necessary step.Since we had designed and asked the questions ourselves in our own way and compiled our answers, therefore perhaps there were unclear parts in the compiled answers.New questions have also appeared possibly due to poor audio quality, but wouldn¡¦t these new questions be great for our next interview?
Go students!I know it is hard work, but all will be worth it with your participation!Go for it!

Planning Webpage Outlines

Content:

Today we used the computer class to confirm the planned outline and work schedule for making the webpage, during the 20 days before winter break where we have arranged for visits at the Lanyu Homecare Association, Home Affairs, Town Hall and Health Station, which have been approved by the school principle, and the school will send requests to the arranged places for help in conducting interviews!

We needed to use these 20 days to compile the collected data since they needed to be discusses and validated.I think this will also be a big challenge for the students!

The Second Discussion on Interview Questions and Allocations

Content:

After discussing the webpage¡¦s outline, we began allocation and discussing the contents for the second interview, and with a confirmed outline as guide I could more systematically compile the data with the students. The students could also have a deep recognition and understanding of the topic.

During the first interview I was also careless, as during the discussion with the students about the questions they tended to focus on the establishment of the Association, which is the third part of the webpage¡¦s outline.I thought that it was okay since by participating in this event I am also learning with the children, and even though I have already completed my Master¡¦s thesis and was more familiar with research structure and procedures, when faced with students I needed to see through their thinking and adjust to their abilities. But it does feel easier this time as it was my second participation in CyberFair

Furthermore, the school principle and the Grade 5¡¦s and 6¡¦s also gave us huge support, whether in adjusting their classes or with sending out requests we were greater helped by the school, which has allowed our scheduled visits and interviews next Friday to proceed as planned.

Now only a few minor details required my or the parent¡¦s coordination within the village, as the consent for interview was still needed from the volunteers and homecare providers - In terms of research, this is an ethical request, and in terms of people, this is a respect.Isn¡¦t our topic¡¦s key-points and underlying meaning focused on letting others feel the respect and care for the living?

Confirming the Outline¡¦s Group Allocation

Content:

Today we confirmed our group allocation for according to outline:

Group 1 will be responsible for interviewing Aunt Shu-lan¡¦s

backgrounds, and Cheng-guo, Tze-huang and myself will be responsible.

Group 2 will investigate the current status concerning the village¡¦s elderly people, and Chiong-hui, Min-cheng and Min-hua will be responsible.

Group 3 will visit Lanyu Homecare Association, and Shao-eng, Cao-fa and Shao-an will be responsible.

The progress report part was to allow students to control the research procedures¡¦ progresses and resource allocation, and it must be recorded in detail to allow the whole event to progress smoothly.

Don¡¦t forget to prepare for the second interview!

Learning How to Interview Others

Content:

Today the teacher wanted us to practice interviewing skills that we should note during our second interview. The teacher said, ¡§We must first introduce ourselves and then gradually ask our questions!¡¨

The first outline was based on Aunt Shu-lan, the second was on the nurses at the Health Station and the Home Affairs and the third was the members of Lanyu Homecare Association. Our questions have been drafted, but how to ask them required further thinking.

In the afternoon, the teacher asked us to stay and practice in groups, how to interview, how to write notes and how to record audio. We hope to compile the necessary data in the shortest time.

Interview Skills Training

Content:

For our students to be able to independently ask, record and compile data some more time would possibly be needed!

The second interview will be conducted on the coming Saturday, but although the interview outline was already discussed and complete, the students were having trouble converting it into words, however they could keep to the basic structure and necessary details.Yet we hoped that the students could conduct the interview even more smoothly, therefore we utilized almost 2 hours after school to demonstrate, by using the first question in the first outline, how to allow the interviewee to feel at ease and answer all that he/she knows. This requires continuous practice, and when thinking back to when I learnt about interviewing at the graduate institute, I had used close to 20 tutorials before I understood more about interview skills and content. Thus although it would be difficult to students, I think slowly it can be learnt. The students only require time, practice and opportunity to use it.

Allowing the students to ask each other as practice is also a good method!

Preparing for the Interview

Content:

Tomorrow we will be conducting the second skype interview.Today the students did not go to the computer room, and they were asked to use some time to re-confirm the interview outline

for tomorrow.

Maybe the students were feeling pressurized in the last few days, as I heard a teacher say that some of them were dozing off during class.I think that as the guidance teacher I should be held most responsible!

I think that, when planning the learning activities for the students their physical stamina and willingness must also be considered, and if their learning pace was set to fast the opposite effect would be obtained!Tomorrow I will treat the students! After all, the students also all know that ¡V our teacher is almost collapsing from fatigue!

The Second skype Interview

Content:

It¡¦s really cold today!I think it¡¦s only a little over 10 degrees in Lanyu. The cool wind blows non-stop and I was really worried that the students will over-sleep.

And it really happened, some students overslept but everyone arrived in a hurry, especially Lu-yi, it¡¦s even his birthday today!

We wished Lu-y happy birthday!
Today we did our second online interview. The students skills in operating the software and conducting the interview had improved, which made me the guidance teacher very happy.I think if our students were trained systematically and had the opportunity to practice then our expected goal would be accomplished.

Today we had gathered much information, mainly on the main informant¡¦s background, academic experience, work experience and postgraduate studies. We also understood more about how Aunt Shu-lan grew up and at the same time the students were touched even more.
During today¡¦s interview, the teacher understood that ¡V you have to treat every student the same and not just be good to students that were good in academics or were pretty.I will remember that!

The audio-recording were also stored. The students were asked to quickly download them and start their compilation.

Topic:

Difficulty in Compiling the Interview Data

Content:

With the students¡¦ typing speed the drafting of the interview memo could not be finished within the time limit, therefore some changes in their training should be made.So I used the method of group-work and allocated students into 2 to 4 groups, then after they have had enough time to first listen to the whole interview audio-recording, to only concentrate on the part each group was allocated to extract the key-points and write the summary!

This method can train the students¡¦ concentration and ability to compile data, and although we still required more time to discuss the compiled key-points and summaries, it not only introduced more information to the students and allowed them to hear different opinions during discussions.

Actually I had been thinking non-stop about whether asking the students to compile all the key-points would also be difficult for them?Since this interview produced a lot of data, about 2 ours of audio-recording, and was too much for students, so we had used a different method and gave it a try!

Also, we need to start preparing for Friday¡¦s interview!

Digital Beam - Not just spots

Content:

Yesterday I discussed our current work progress and webpage outline with the ¡§digital spots¡¨, which are students at the NationalTaitungUniversity, and had obtained a more comprehensive understanding.

I feel that the university students now are really superb, and knew what they were talking about, whether in webpage technique or problem discussions, which made me, who has completed my education close to 10 years ago, feel like I learnt a lot.I used the lunch time to discuss with the students, and we hoped that we could finish the data collection and compilation soon, so as not to delay the overall progress.

Progressing Without Making Progress

Content:

After two weeks of hardship, some students could no longer bear it and ask the teacher for a break!

I thought.. Yes!We were not aiming to finish compiling the data tomorrow already, and the students have been working really hard on compiling the interview data and the outline for Friday¡¦s interview, why not let them rest a bit. With a little rest here we will go even further! But the students still went to the computer room to look discretely, and many students were still listening to the interview tapes.I was touched!

Therefore I decided, when we go for the interview, I will treat you all to Pearl Milk Tea.The students have really been worked!

Today we made no progress, because for the students, resting was their most important job.Tomorrow we start again!

Exploring Lanyu¡¦s Culture Concerning Death ¡V The belief of Iraraley

Content:

Thanks to the Head of the Parent¡¦s Association, Mr. Yung-chuang Hsieh for setting aside time to come to the school and share with the students a document published by him in the Geoscientific Research Group of Eastern Taiwan, ¡§An Introductory View of the Traditional View of Death in Tao ¡V the Perspective of Iraraley¡¨.
The Yami regard ¡§death¡¨ as tabooed, yet unavoidable.Traditional culture has many levels of meaning, and cannot simply be expressed with ¡§avoidance¡¨ or ¡§fear¡¨.In other words, we needed to be guided through local views to see how traditional culture regards the end point of life.

Mr. Hsieh¡¦s energetic and fun talk did not produce fear or negativity in the students, and in fact they were more interested to understand funerals, which do occur but could not be witnessed (children are not allowed), and what actually went on inside.

Much was received during this tutorial!

Students, You Have Worked Very Hard!

Content:

Today was a tiresome day, I¡¦m sure all the students are exhausted!

We started at 8:30 pm and only returned to school at 4pm.A van carrying 10 ¡§flying-fishes¡¨ had set out in glory!

The first stop was to our main target, Lanyu Homecare Association.Sister Hsin-yi meticulously spoke to us about the establishment of the association, services provided by the volunteers, elderly homecare and the building of the elderly congregation center. The students were all focused on listening, and had asked questions which pierced through the surface straight to the key issues. They had prepared well!

Aunt Shu-hui and Eng-ci had carefully explained to us about the health conditions of the elderly people and the content of their services, and their analysis on the causes of death of elderly people was very comprehensive and provided us with much information!

Aunt Ju-yu at Home Affairs had gathered information for us from the computer, and showed us the elderly population statistics and male to female ratio of persons older than 65 years in LanyuTownship.

Ms. Mei-lun Chou at the Town Hall demonstrated to us the currently social benefits and measures for the elderly people provided by the government, as well as the grants and financial aid accessible by LanyuTownship¡¦s elderly people, and she also provided a different view in our understanding of elderly problems.

After a day of hard work the students collected a lot of information, now what follows is data compilation and comprehension.Go for it!

Some of the questions asked by the students were really good!Their performance was very satisfying!

Visiting the Village with the Volunteers

Content:

To every student for their hard-work today, thank you!And to all the big-sisters from the Department of Art Education, NationalTaitungUniversity, thank you!For having accompanied us to the village and with Lanyu Homecare Association¡¦s volunteers to the elderly people¡¦s homes.

Of course in the process we saw some unbearable situations, since some individuals had disabilities caused by motor-vehicle accidents while some had disease due to ageing, but everything we heard and saw had impacted the students¡¦ thoughts!

Though perhaps it was overly profound or serious, but I believe that the students will care for the individuals and not tolerate their situation, so that the lights of the Angels, who are silently working, may spread over the net with our work, thereby allowing more people to the care and respect to the people around them.Don¡¦t wait, start doing it now!

Another important finding was that in fact what the elderly people needed was not treatment of their diseases, but often just by chatting with them they feel satisfied!
