Saxophone
– Unbridled Jazz Instrument
|
|
|
When
Antoine-Joseph Sax (1814-1894) invented the saxophone, he could
not possibly have foreseen it crossing the pond at the end of the
nineteenth century. At which point an American has obtained the
right to manufacture saxophones, and it accidentally became the
musical instrument of choice for jazz music, and it produced great
influence on the development of American jazz music for the next
hundred years. |

This
unique half-worm, half-beast musical instrument extrudes royal
elegance from its delicate lines on its exterior. Its bent
mouthpiece likens a swan with beautiful curves; its flared
horn likens a lily that is silently releasing fragrance. The
entire saxophone leaves us with the impression of being both
active and quiet at the same time. |

A
saxophone can produce very rich sound. Its higher notes slot it
between the clarinet and the French horn, its middle notes slot
it between the human tone and the cello, and its lower notes slot
it between the bass string instrument and the tuba. In general,
the sound of a saxophone likens that of a string instrument, and
it contains an element of melancholy in it. |

In
addition, reeds made of different materials produce dramatically
different sounds. The metal reeds produce sounds that are
as clear as the heat of a summer's sun. They will unleash
the passion inside of you. On the other hand, the rubber reeds
produce more subdued sounds that remind us of an ocean under
full moon, for they contain boundless energies. |

When a
saxophone is played forcefully, it could be very exciting
to listen to, therefore it is most suitable for jazz music.
Coleman Hawkins of the 1930's and John Coltrane of the 1950's
were both master jazz musicians. |

The
saxophone always feels as if it becomes one with its performer,
when it became an extension of the performer's soul. When it is
not being played, a saxophone is like a tamed beast in the lap of
its performer. When it is making a sound, the saxophone is like
a guardsman who is ready to strike. A saxophone is using its unbridled
tone to safeguard its performer's musical turf. |
