Most
of the saxophone makers in Houli are family businesses. There are
more than twenty of them here. The persons who are responsible for
bringing the western musical instruments to Houli are Mr. Chang
Lien-cheng, who loved playing western musical instruments, and a
group of young music lovers. They are the ones who brought this
trend to Houli, planting the seed for musical instrument manufacturing
in Taiwan. |

They
were given the opportunity to disassemble a saxophone that was damaged
during a fire. They took the saxophone apart to study all the working
parts. Mr. Chang Lien-cheng was able to produce a set of detailed
drawings for these parts. After overcoming numerous obstacles, they
were able to assemble a saxophone from the parts they produced.
This was the birth of the very first saxophone in Houli. |

Houli's
saxophone industry was born thanks to the dedication of this group
of young men. Because they were not selfish, they would teach others
about what they had learned. The result was an industry that started
to take shape and eventually prospered. |

The
prosperity of this industry was considered quite a miracle,
considering that Taiwan relied heavily on Japan for the importation
of most musical instruments and parts. Other large corporations
couldn't help but take notice of Taiwan's burgeoning saxophone
industry. |

Houli's
saxophone industry not only popularized the music of the
western world in Taiwan, but it also pioneered the manufacturing
of western musical instrument in Taiwan. This industry is
still going strong, and it holds its own against competitions
from around the world.
