After
Mr. Chang Lien-cheng successfully assembled Holi's very first saxophone
based on a set of blueprints that he drew, with the financial support
of Mr. Chang Ji-pang, he partnered with Mr. Chang Jie-de, who was
working as a tin bucket welder at the time, to open the Taiwan Woodwind
Instrument Company at 46 Ping-Deng Street, Taichung City. The many
different woodwind instruments they produced gained approval from
musicians everywhere. Thus, they are known as the forefathers of
the Taiwan Woodwind Party. |

For
reasons unknown, Taiwan Woodwind Instrument Company went out of
business even though it's doing well in the marketplace. Mr. Chang
Ji-pang continued to work in the music industry, and Mr. Chang Lien-cheng
went back to his hometown to form the Lien-Cheng Musical Instrument
Company to continue the production of saxophones. Since most of
the workers at the Taiwan Woodwind Instrument Company were originally
from Holi, many accomplished proteges decided to open their own
businesses in Holi, resulting in the mushrooming of saxophone industry
in Holi, and the number kept increasing over the years. |

Mr.
Chang Lien-cheng was never selfish when it came to sharing
the skills that he had learned over the years. He always taught
his proteges everything he knew, with a passion and discipline
for music, without any reservation. Even the case to keep
the saxophone in was handmade by him, to ensure the uniformity
of craftsmanship. |

Nowadays,
most of the saxophone makers in Holi learned their crafts from Mr.
Chang Lien-cheng. They not only learned how to produce an instrument,
but they also learned to tune the instrument, and they all understood
the music principles. Since all the tasks now are becoming more
and more specialized, tasks such as parts supplies, polishing, assembly,
tuning, and packaging are handled by different people. |

Mr.
Chang Lien-cheng's son and grandson both inherited this business
from him. They have both become elite saxophone makers. The
grandson Mr. Chang Chong-yao founded the Mr. Chang Lien-cheng
Saxophone Museum to commemorate his grandfather's passion
for saxophones. The museum faithfully records the story of
Mr. Chang Lien-cheng and Holi's saxophones. Even though traditionally
the saxophone industry is not considered significant, it is
hoped that this industry will one day wake up the culture
awareness of the region. |
