Interview Protophyte production and marketing farm

Interview Protophyte production and marketing farm (Shiting)01/18/94

Place: Erh-Lin Production and Marketing Team of Native Plants in Changhwa
Participants; Five teachers and ten pupils

Today we got a lift and arrived at Erh-Lin Production and Marketing Team. We observed many plants that required conservation, such as comphandra luzoniensis, viburnum odoratissimum and antidesma pentandrum barbatum. We also discovered many interesting characteristics of the native plants. And, we came to know that all these achievements were made throughMr. Wu’s hard work.
Mr. Wu’s explanation helped me know that syzygium tripinnatum is also calledTaiwan wax apple (those apples we eat in daily life are of exotic species); almost all the fruits of Myrtaceae are eatable. The fruits of comphandra luzoniensis look like loquats; Manila leea is also called “fanpoyuan” ...
Mr. Wu also told us that the gene mutation might occur in the native plants, which led to the apparently similar but really different phenomena. Therefore, we should establish the Atlas of plants based on long-term observation, even DNA comparison.
We tasted the fruits of the plants. They had a special taste. Some tasted sour. Some tasted a bit astringent. Each kind of fruits has its own flavor. What impressed me most was the leaf of native cinnamon. When I tasted it, I felt a little cool and delicious. The leaves can be used as tea. What an unforgettable experience!

I felt I acquired further knowledge about plants through this tour.

Our teacher gave us a lift from school. We arrived at the destination Erh-Lin Production and Marketing Team of Native Plants, where we metMr. Wu. He introduced many plants to us, including viburnum taitoense Hayata, syzygium tripinnatum and syzygium buxifolium. The most special species was native cinnamon for it is eatable. WhenMr. Wu told us its leaf is eatable, my first reaction was to bite it. I had no special feel at first. However, the taste became astringent when I tasted it for some time. It had a special taste. Upon our leave, everyone got a pot of native cinnamon.
